Dr. Bijaya Avasthy Hans was appointed to Oakland Community Health Network's Board in December 2012. Most recently, she was a staff physician in Interventional Radiology at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Detroit, MI. For more than 30 years, Dr. Hans has provided medical care for veteran servicemen and women, many of whom have PTS, substance use, homelessness, and mental health disorders.
She is also the parent and guardian of a young man who has received services through OCHN: "I have considerable experience with the needs of clients and their families, as well as the important role the agency plays in their lives," says Dr. Hans. "I hope to be able to represent the perspective of people with disabilities and their families and have the opportunity to help the community at large to understand the mechanism and challenges OCHN faces in providing services."
Dr. Hans received her master's degree from Punjabi University, in Patiala, India, and later completed her residency in the Department of Radiology at Wayne State University. In addition to understanding the biology of mental health and disease, her educational background has helped her to understand the scientific advances made in the field.
As a volunteer board member of the ARC of Oakland County, Dr. Hans has firsthand experience in advocacy efforts for people with disabilities.
